Speaking about the unspeakable on behalf of the unheard

My quote from Nicole Gibson’s speech was reblogged by a few people on Tumblr hostile to the unborn, and having read through the responses it’s pretty amazing how accurately she pinpointed the issue.  These folks pretty much confirmed everything she said in their attempt to defend the indefensible.

Consider:

@bebinn

The only people who have redefined “baby” are pro-lifers. It’s a baby when it’s born; it’s an embryo/fetus when it’s not. That is scientific fact.

And what if that child had been born the day before?  Or the day before that?  What would we do with an embryo in the outside world!?  Let’s get real and talk about the real scientific facts.  Given current technology, babies are viable outside the womb at 24 weeks.  Babies have survived delivery as early as 18 weeks.  At 8 weeks all their body systems are fully developed and they just need to grow.  At 42 days they have brain waves.  At 18 days after conception they have a beating heart.  On day 1 they have the unique DNA encoding that makes them a human being and they will carry that instruction set throughout their whole life.  Pro-lifers aren’t redefining “baby”.  Pro-choicers want to dehumanize the child to make the decision to end a human life for the sake of convenience more palatable.  More personal.  It’s about defending a choice, and it makes them squirm to have to face the reality that that choice comes at the cost of depriving someone else a lifetime of choices.  Our individual choices and freedoms are (rightly) so very valuable, but my personal rights stop when they come at the expense of another human life.

Consider also:

Maybe that person [referring to the mother] would have cured cancer, had they been allowed to finish school. Maybe that person would have become our next leader, had they not been forced to put her goals and dreams on hold to raise a child they were unprepared for. Maybe that person would have been able to make a real difference in the world, had they not lost their connections, their money, and everything they had worked for, because you want to call it a baby.

I think Nicole responded to this best in her speech: “Make the choice to end another person’s life because it’s expedient.  You deserve it.  What’s more, you have a right to it.  In our entitlement culture, everything you need, everything you want, everything that would make your life more convenient is something you deserve, something to which you have a right.”

If your life or safety is not in jeopardy, then nothing is worth ending another’s life.  These anti-life arguments all just fall completely flat.
